Dining Room / Drums
To finish off the month of August, I’ve completed the Dining Room on The Books site with several more animations, neatly finishing off another job on my to-do list. Today I began adding Robby’s drum tracks to a couple of songs to see how they sound as well. Erik and I have thrown ten or twenty mixes of “A Chasing After the Wind” back and forth, attempting to perfect the smallest details as much as possible before we release it. In the meantime, we are also waiting on cello tracks, which we hope will arrive in September.
Weekend Update
I just returned from a long weekend of relentless songwork for the feather bearing grim tidings. Erik completely re-recorded his vocals and acoustic guitar tracks for “A Chasing After the Wind,” a song which is very, very close to being completed, and which we will likely post on the Web for others to hear pretty soon. Erik is working on a new song, and I’m trying to work on doing the final mixing for “A Chasing After the Wind.” We’d like to try to finish the Grimfeather Web site before we release this next track so that people actually have something to go to find out more about the band if they end up enjoying it. We have some interesting ideas involving video, but we’ll have to wait for a time when we can actually get together to tape some footage. The album is taking awhile to piece together because some of the songs are rather massive, but the good news is that Erik and I are getting along wonderfully on the new material, so we may see some actual longevity in this project!

I just the finished Web book for Stateless and published it on the Unwed Sailor Web site. For those of you who don’t already know, Stateless is a collaboration between the bands Early Day Miners, Unwed Sailor, and photographer Chris Bennett. There is a fairly lengthy explanation in the Web book, but to sum it up, Chris shot a 31-minute film of driveby Super 8 film footage from different countries over the course of four years, and the two bands created a soundtrack for it. The Web book lets you listen to the whole soundtrack and view some of Chris’s photos at the same time. If that sounds interesting to you, you can check it out right here.
Erik and I are planning to get together and re-record a bunch of his vocals and guitar this weekend using a new, much improved microphone. We also hope to mix some of Robby’s drums, so hopefully we’ll be moving closer to having our first set of five songs finished.
Chasing
I was laid off my fulltime job at a glass shop last weekend, so I’ve been taking advantage of the time I now have available to work feverishly on the Grimfeather material. I’ve been able to accomplish about twenty tracks worth of material on the new song “A Chasing After the Wind” and Erik and I have both been enjoying it thoroughly. Erik is planning to leave from Iowa tomorrow to head back to California with Robby’s drum tracks on disc which we will most likely add to the mix soon. My feeling is that we’ll have something new up for listening by the end of this month. We’re very excited about the future of the band because things seem to working really well between Erik and I right now.
In other news, Unwed Sailor will be going on a second tour soon – you can check out dates on the official site I’m working on here. If they’re coming near you, I suggest attending! The show I went to was very pleasant.
Grimfeather Drumming
Erik and I had an exciting and productive practice this weekend, and it looks as though the album is going to be very enjoyable when it’s finished. Robby Ogden is slated to record drums and percussion to four songs tomorrow in Iowa, and judging by the quality of the samples he’s sent us, it should be great! Our recording space has been redesigned and reorganized, so there is much more space available to place instruments. I’m looking forward to delving back into it this week!
